State Central Library
Background:
Libraries are treasure troves of knowledge, information and entertainment. It is peoples University from where every citizen can acquire knowledge, education, gain constructive ideas, self-confidence and spend leisure in meaningful prospect.
The first Community Library at Gangtok was established in the late 1960s. Subsequently, the State Government notified the Community Center Library at Gangtok as State Central Library vide notification No. 92/Home/200 dated 06.11.2000.
The Public Libraries under Culture Department have a clear mission to foster inculcation of reading habit and to generate interest in reading and writing amongst the younger generation and to reach out to the unreached section of the society with an objective of providing citizens with access to information and enhance the flow of ideas and culture which is a part of the heritage.
The State Central Library (SCL), District and Sub-Divisional libraries have now been working towards transforming Public Libraries into vibrant and inclusive knowledge spaces through various outreach awareness programs for reading habit and interactive sessions with authors for generating love for reading amongst the masses.
The membership fee is as follows:
- Life Member - Onetime fee of Rs. 500/-
- Ordinary Member – Renewable annual fee of Rs. 50/- (Refundable security deposit of Rs. 200/-)
